Adult-born hippocampal neurons are important for cognitive plasticity in rodents. There is evidence for hippocampal neurogenesis in adult humans, although whether its extent is sufficient to have functional significance has been questioned. We have assessed the generation of hippocampal cells in humans by measuring the concentration of nuclear bomb test-derived 14 C in genomic DNA and we present an integrated model of the cell turnover dynamics. We found that a large subpopulation of hippocampal neurons, constituting one third of the neurons, is subject to exchange. In adult humans, new neurons are added per day, corresponding to an annual turnover of 1. We conclude that neurons are generated throughout adulthood and that the rates are comparable in middle aged humans and mice, suggesting that adult hippocampal neurogenesis may contribute to human brain function.

Dating apps have proliferated in the age of the internet and smart phones. One in three relationships in the UK now began online. As is the case with most digital tools users remain largely unfamiliar with the legal issues surrounding dating apps and who is responsible when things go wrong. Crimes connected with dating apps in general have rocketed as perpetrators have utilised online apps to easily target victims.

Silly stories means it’s all smiles for Daily Mash owner Digitalbox
Online there are a few sources for sarcastic, satirical and very funny news outlets — The Onion and Click Hole to name a few — but for me none do it with the same downright insolence and wit as The Daily Mash. We Paul Stokes and Neil Rafferty are former newspaper journalists. The Daily Mash is like the Press Association news service operating in a wonky parallel universe. The Mash was born in So we decided to launch a satirical news site where we just made it all up, even though we knew nothing about the internet and how it worked.
We did no market research or market testing, we just put it up and people liked it.

Picture this, it’s a warm, sunny, Sunday afternoon and I’m sitting with two girlfriends in a gorgeous old pub, surrounded by families enjoying a delicious roast. It felt like the whole pub stopped what they were doing and looked over to our table. She passes her phone over the gravy pot and I’m confronted with a huge we’re talking HUGE phallus being held up ever so proudly by its human owner. We all burst out laughing like ridiculous school girls and really used the zoom button for the purpose I’m sure Steve Jobs invented it for.
What struck me most was that it was barely afternoon and the bloke had decided that, yep, it would be the perfect time to woo his lady with a pic of his pecker. Now I don’t know about you, but I prefer my roast beef with a side of mash, not straight up porn! Of course, it got us talking about dick pics. Why does it seem that no bloke has a picture of his face to put on his Bumble profile, but plenty of pics of his old fella?!
Why do they never get the angle or lighting right? Why does it always look so aggressive?

Launched by a pair of disillusioned newspaper journalists in , who spotted a gap for a domestic parody news website inspired by the success of The Onion in the US, The Daily Mash has grown from a source of online distraction for office workers into a thriving business, complete with a lucrative merchandise sideline. Co-founders Paul Stokes, a former business editor of The Scotsman and Neil Rafferty, an ex-Sunday Times political correspondent, now employ an editor and a team of eight regular writers, who deliver a diet of the satirical, absurd and scatological to a daily audience of one million unique web visitors.
Stokes and Rafferty had considered creating a more serious journalistic start-up. Nobody was doing anything quite like that in the UK. The writers are scattered across the country – the site’s current editor, former BBC journalist Tim Telling, is based in Bristol.
